Salary: Grade 4, £7,966- £8,373 per annum. £12.18- £12.80 per hour

3 positions x 15 hours per week, term time working 38 weeks per year. (Daily split shift) Monday-Friday

Your role:

HtS PAs escort children and young people, with special educational needs, learning disabilities and physical disabilities, to schools both inside and outside the borough each day utilising a split shift. These journeys take place in taxis which are commissioned by the councils Integrated transport unit (ITU). You could be working on a one-to-one basis with a child/young person or working with several children/young people who are transported to school on minibuses/coaches. You will be responsible for the safety, well-being, and comfort of the children/young people during transit. You will be subject to an enhanced disclosure check. Your HtS route will be a minimum of 15 hours per week.

About you:

The councils HtS provision is a statutory service which ensures children/young people get to school every day. The children/young people completely depend on the service, and it is essential that you are totally reliable to fulfil this obligation every day. Some children/young people can display very challenging behaviour; therefore, an understanding nature and empathy are necessary skills when interacting with your passengers and you must always have a calm and composed demeanour when dealing with difficult situations. Changes to passengers or contractors, and potential incidents during transit, highlight how important effective and clear communication is between all stakeholders.

About us:

Wigan Council has been voted ‘Council of the Year’ at the iESE Public Sector Transformation Awards and has recently published The Deal 2030, our ambitious plan for our borough.  We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or 'unbroken' between the supporting organisations.

HtS transport is part of the Local Kitchen, Transport & Road Safety (LTRS) service. HtS PAs are supported by multiple teams within LTRS:

  • Integrated Transport Unit (ITU) manage taxi routes and passenger allocation.
  • Business Support ensure all routes are staffed during periods of absenteeism.
  • Operations manage all LTRS operational personnel.

You will get to know many children/young people and become part of their daily supportive routine. The LTRS transport team listen to staff and provide transparent and appropriate support. We are dedicated to innovation and continue to advance the service through trust and technology. No matter what the working day brings we’ve got you covered.

Here at Wigan, we are proud to support flexible working patterns, when the service can accommodate this. We also take a blended approach to where we work, depending on the work we do. This may include working from home (My Place), the office (Our Place) or the community (Your Place). We like to thank our employees for their hard work and commitment by giving them the opportunity to access a range of exclusive rewards and benefits click here to find out more about working for #TeamWigan.
