Apply to register your interest in volunteering with GMFRS. If your application is successful, we will invite you to a group assessment session. Please note, assessment sessions are held a few times a year, depending on volunteering vacancies, therefore, whilst we will inform you if you have been shortlisted, it may be up to 6 months before we invite you to assessment session. 
 
Please carefully read the details of the volunteer role you are applying for, so you understand the role and commitment we are asking you to make before submitting your application. Volunteering roles are not associated with applications to be a Firefighter, volunteer activities do not include undertaking any Firefighter duties, the volunteer team can not advise on Firefighter applications, or taster sessions. 
 
When and why we need you: 
The majority of our events are during the day, weekdays, with some opportunities for weekend support at Open Days and Charity Events. You need to be able and willing to commit to six hours or 2 sessions per month. 

By volunteering and sharing your time, knowledge and experience you will be helping communities across Greater Manchester, and you will also have the opportunity to join GMFRS colleagues at activities, meet new people, develop new skills, improve your CV, boost your confidence and improve your communication skills. 
 
As a Community and Support Volunteer you will be offered opportunities to help reduce risk of fire, road traffic collisions and water incidents by engaging and educating members of our communities and supporting our operational crews, by attending operational exercises to role play a live casualty to help create a more realistic and challenging training scenarios. 
 
How we will identify your suitability as a volunteer 

Tell us all about you in your application! We will use your application to assess your skills, knowledge and experience and availability to identify if you are an ideal candidate to volunteer for GMFRS.  

If you are successful, we will invite you to a group assessment session where we can learn more about you and you can demonstrate your ability to work with others, engage members of the public and clearly communicate to deliver safety information and advice. 

Volunteer assessment 
Assessments are done as a group, this provides the opportunity for us to learn more about you. At the group assessment, there will be two activities: 
 
Activity 1: You will have two minutes to briefly introduce yourself to assessors and other candidates and share with us your skills, knowledge and experience and motivation for wanting to volunteer with GMFRS. 
  

Activity 2: You will be provided safety information from one of the following topics; Home Fire Safety, Road Safety, Water Safety or safety campaigns, which can be found on the Manchester Fire Website Your Safety - Greater Manchester Fire Rescue Service. You will work with others in a small group to identify key messages and as a group, give a short presentation.
